Kevin Clay

 

Kevin is a specialist in commercial and civil litigation.  He has over 25 years’ experience in litigation in many areas of the law during which he has appeared as counsel in numerous cases.

 

Kevin regularly appears as counsel in High Court proceedings and has appeared as senior counsel in the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.  Kevin also has experience as counsel in arbitration and mediation.

 

Kevin holds a Master’s degree in law with honours. LLM (Hons).

 

Kevin’s practice sees him appearing in cases involving commercial disputes, company litigation, negligence claims, tenant and landlord issues and other contractual disputes.  His experience includes claims against councils and under the Fair Trading Act 1986.  Kevin has appeared in litigation arising out of trusts and in claims involving estates including Family Protection Act 1955 claims.  Kevin has appeared in construction and building litigation and also in cases in the High Court earthquake litigation list.  Kevin has also successfully defended clients in criminal jury trials in both High Courts and District Courts.  He has also appeared as counsel in the Coroner’s Court.

 

Kevin is a member of the New Zealand Law Society Civil Litigation and Disputes Tribunal Committee which role includes making submissions to Government on law reforms affecting such litigation.  Kevin has served on numerous local NZLS Committees.

 

Outside of his legal career Kevin has an interest in educational matters and until recently was the Chair of Selwyn House School in Christchurch.
